The Republic of Cyprus is becoming a popular choice for Americans seeking a more balanced lifestyle in Europe. It offers a safe place to raise a family, a business-friendly environment, and some of the lowest taxes in Europe. These benefits make Cyprus an attractive option for professionals, entrepreneurs, and families who want both freedom and stability.
As a member of the European Union, Cyprus gives US citizens clear paths to residency and even citizenship. The country also offers a stable financial system and a welcoming community where English is widely spoken. These are just some of the reasons why more Americans are choosing Cyprus for a better life abroad. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about moving to Cyprus from the US in 2025.
Why Cyprus? Cyprus is probably one of the easiest EU countries for Americans to integrate into. From widespread English fluency to a strong expat community, it offers a smooth landing for those looking to relocate.
Warm and Familiar Culture Cyprus offers a lifestyle that feels both familiar and refreshing for Americans. English is widely spoken, especially in cities and business settings. Road signs, menus, and public services are all in English, making daily life feel accessible from day one.
At the same time, Cyprus has a strong sense of tradition rooted in family, food, and community. The slower, more humane pace of life is something many Americans quickly grow to appreciate.
Safe and Family-Friendly Cyprus is one of the safest countries in Europe, if not the world. Violent crime is rare, and gun violence is virtually unheard of. Families enjoy a peaceful environment where children can play outdoors freely and safely. The island also has strong family values and good international schools, which makes it a great place to raise a family.
Cost of Living and Quality of Life Living in Cyprus is far more affordable than in most US cities. Real estate is easier to afford, healthcare is good and reasonably priced, and daily costs are lower overall. Your money goes further on things like dining out, childcare, and private education, without losing comfort or quality.
Residency Options for US Citizens So how can you stay in Cyprus legally beyond the 90-day limitation of the tourist visa? As we mentioned, there are several pathways, depending on your plans and needs. Here are the four most common ways US citizens can relocate to Cyprus:
1. Temporary Residence Permit ("Pink Slip") This is the simplest and most common option for Americans who want to stay long-term in Cyprus. Despite not granting the right to work for a Cypriot employer, you can still run your own business or work for an employer abroad.
More importantly, the temporary residency permit also allows you to include your family in the application. It’s valid for 12 months and can be renewed every year.
To qualify, you'll need:
Proof of income from outside Cyprus. Minimum 12 months rental agreement or property ownership. Private health insurance. We usually recommend Americans relocating to Cyprus to start with this permit. It has the lowest entry requirements and allows your spouse and dependent children to join you. Making it ideal for testing life in Cyprus before making a full commitment.
After five years of legal residency, you become eligible for permanent residency.
If you are interested in exploring this option, we explain everything you need to know in our complete guide to the Cyprus Pink Slip .
2. Digital Nomad Visa The second option available to Americans is the Digital Nomad Visa. With this visa you can live in Cyprus for up to 12 months, with the option to renew for a maximum of two more years. Your spouse and children can also join you as dependents.
Requirements include:
Proof of employment or business outside Cyprus. Monthly net income of at least €3,500. 1 year rental agreement. Private health insurance. However, we rarely recommend this option to non-EU clients. The temporary residency permit is usually the better choice. It gives you more flexibility and a significantly lower net income requirement for you and your family.
3. Permanent Residency by Investment If you're ready to make a long-term commitment, Cyprus also offers a fast-track residency option through investment. By investing at least €300,000 in a new property, you can gain permanent residency in as little as two months.
Like the temporary permit, this permit also does not grant you the right to work for an employer in Cyprus.
Additional requirements:
Annual net income of at least €50,000 from abroad. The amount increases with €15,000 for the spouse and €10,000 for each child under the age of 18 added to the application. Your spouse's income (if any) can count towards the total amount. Clean criminal record. Valid private health insurance. We recommend this fast-track option to Americans who are familiar with Cyprus, and already know where they'd like to live. For a full overview on how the program works, see our Cyprus Permanent Residency by Investment Guide .
4. EU Blue Card for Highly Skilled Professionals Americans who are not working remotely and not running their own business, can apply for the EU Blue Card instead. Unlike other options on this list, the Blue Card grants you and your spouse the right to work in Cyprus. The permit allows non-EU professionals to live and work in Cyprus if they receive a local job offer in a high-demand sector.
Unlike the other options, the Blue Card is tied to a specific job and employer. However, it also offers one of the clearest paths to long-term residency and eventually EU citizenship. Your family can join you immediately, and after 33 months you may apply for permanent residency. With continued employment and local integration, citizenship becomes possible after just four years .
To qualify, you’ll need:
A signed job offer or employment contract for at least 6 months. A university degree or 3+ years of work experience in a high-skill role. A salary between €20,000 – €32,000 per year (based on sector). Private health insurance in Cyprus. We typically recommend the EU Blue Card to professionals in technical fields like IT, finance or engineering. If this sounds like you, our team can guide you through the application process and help you assess if you qualify.
Becoming a Non-Domicile Tax Resident in Cyprus No matter which residency path you choose, you should apply for Non-Dom tax status after you become a Cyprus tax resident. This special tax status gives you some of the best tax benefits, not just in Europe, but in the world.
With Non-Dom status, you are exempt from paying tax on dividends and interest for 17 years, even if the income comes from abroad. Additionally, Cyprus has no inheritance tax, and no capital gains tax. The only exception being on real-estate in Cyprus. For Americans looking to protect and grow their wealth legally, this is a major advantage.
But you can only apply for Non-Dom status after you become a Cyprus tax resident. You can qualify for tax residency under one of two rules:
The 183-Day Rule: You become a tax resident if you spend at least 183 days in Cyprus during the year. These days don't need to be consecutive, but you must be physically present in the country. The 60-Day Rule: If you spend less time in Cyprus, you can still qualify under the 60-day rule, as long as you meet the following requirements: You are physically present in Cyprus for at least 60 days during the calendar year. You do not reside in any other country for more than 183 days in the same year. You maintain a permanent residential address in Cyprus (either rented or owned). You are employed, run a business, or serve as a director of a company registered in Cyprus. Once you meet one of these rules, you can apply for Non-Dom tax status and fully benefit from Cyprus’s tax-friendly system.

Tax Obligations for US Citizens and the Cyprus-USA Tax Treaty Even after you move to Cyprus and become a tax resident here, you’ll still have to deal with the US tax system. Unlike most countries, the United States taxes its citizens based on citizenship, not where they live. That means all Americans living abroad must continue to file US federal tax returns every year.
But the good news is that Cyprus and the US have a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). This treaty is designed to help prevent double taxation on your income.
Here’s what that means in practice:
Foreign Tax Credit : You can claim a credit for taxes you’ve paid in Cyprus, which reduces what you owe in the US, dollar for dollar. You can also carry forward unused tax credits, which helps lower your US tax bill in future years when your income might be higher.Foreign Earned Income Exclusion: You can exclude up to $126,500 of foreign earned income from US taxes (as of 2024). To qualify, you must meet the Physical Presence or Bona Fide Residence test.Filing Extensions: As a US expat, you automatically get a two-month extension (until June 15) to file your US tax return. You can also request an additional extension to October 15.However, living abroad also means additional reporting requirements:
Foreign Bank Account Report: You must file the FBAR if the total value of all your foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any point during the year.Form 8938: If you own foreign assets above certain thresholds, you'll also need to file this form under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act. While the Cyprus-USA tax treaty helps reduce or avoid double taxation, the rules are complex. To stay compliant and avoid costly mistakes, it’s best to work with a tax expert who understands both systems.
